She says, “In East Palo Alto, going to college is beyond the reach of most people. As for me, it is at the tip of my fingers. I would be the first in my family to go to college and I look forward to establishing this as a family tradition. I refuse to be a statistic. Education is the key that will make my dreams of becoming a mechanical engineer a reality.”
Ana has made a conscious decision to grow and better herself. She improved her academic performance when she began East Palo Alto Academy high school, emerging as a fine student and positive leader on campus. She has taken numerous college classes at Cañada College and Stanford, where instructors have been impressed with her abilities and say that her work is on par to other college students' work. Once she has her degree, Ana is interested in becoming a mechanical engineer and building a car that is environmentally friendly.
The summer after her sophomore year, Ana participated in the Stanford Early College Program studying philosophy and urban studies. She has been awarded Outstanding Achievement awards in Humanities, Geometry and general Academic Achievement, as well as a Most Improved award, recognizing her significant change from her freshmen year. She has accomplished all this while maintaining an active schedule which involves many church and family responsibilities.
