“With a college education, I will be able to get a good paying job – a job that will help me contribute to my family, a job that will help put food in the refrigerator so that I or any of my younger siblings don’t have to come home from school to find the refrigerator empty. I view college and my education as a means to move beyond my poverty into the world of a better life. From the beginning, I have always believed that if I work hard and dedicate myself to help those in need in my community, I can achieve anything.”
Luis is a Cross Country and Track and Field star - captain of one of his teams - and was asked to represent the United States in two 5k Races in Hawaii and in Australia. He has accomplished this while maintaining his academic record and finding time to volunteer at a nursing home. After college, Luis wants to create a non profit organization in his community, or go into law enforcement or civil rights work.
Cross Country has been a focus since Luis’ sophmore year; he was number 5 man in the competing team. Luis was 400 meter Peninsula Athletic League Champion, and got the Coaches' Choice Award and the 2008 Track and Field Captain Award. Track and Field was a favorite sport since his freshman year. He ran the 800 meter race and was the captain of this team, which consisted of three coaches and 45 athletes. Luis also regularly volunteers to helps the nurses and patients in a senior citizen’s home. He has been in the BUILD programs since he was a freshman.
