"People tell me Iām beating the odds. I am frustrated that every man in my family disappeared ā going to jail or just vanishing. But, I am striving to be the exception. None of them held a job for long, much less thought about going to college. In spite of these obstacles, I am still an optimistic person. I trust the world to give me opportunities. I never wanted to think like I was a victim of bad luck or blame other people for making my life difficult. I really believe that hard work yields great benefits.ā
Rickey was MVP of Carlmont JV Football Team and elected Captain of Carlmont Varsity Football Team. He also participated in Varsity Track and Field. In addition to being a talented athlete, Rickey has been on the Carlmont Honor Roll and was a BUILD Business Plan Runner Up, serving as VP of Sales and Marketing of his team. He wants to use his interest in math to major in business in college and pursue a career in business marketing or sales.
His BUILD company was Cover-Up, used for iPods, and Rickey credits BUILD for teaching him the basics of starting and running a business. To develop his sports skills, he attended four years of Summer Football Team and Camps and trained for track. In EPA Community Service, Rickey served food at 'Bread for Life,' and did yard clean up for elders.
